The workshop on Source Water Protection in Canada will cover several topics related to the protection of surface and groundwater resources in Canada, with a specific focus on water governance in Saskatchewan. The workshop will begin with a brief outline of the theory and practice of source water protection, including the natural processes and human activities that impact and influence the quality and quantity of water resources. We will discuss the importance of water conservation and the impact of water contamination on human health, the natural environment, and the Canadian economy. Background information on basic watershed hydrology and the transport of chemicals through the environment will be included. The second section of the workshop will discuss threats to water quality and quantity, including natural and anthropogenic sources of water use and contamination, with examples from local watersheds. The final portion of the workshop will describe and briefly analyze the water governance structure in Canada in relation to source water protection, including legislation and regulations that exist to protect our water resources. We will close with a discussion of public involvement in source water protection, and suggestions on how to contribute to a sustainable future for our water resources.
